APT Texas Tech Talk # 2 A Courthouse Reborn, Carbon Saved: The Restoration of the Travis County Probate Courts

Presented by: Jaime Alvarez, Senior Associate, RA, LEED AP and Nash Hays, Architectural Designer with Lord Aeck Sargent

Respectfully adapting historic courthouses to meet modern needs can present multiple challenges, ranging from program to security and code compliance. In 2012 Travis County received ownership of the former Austin Federal Courthouse from the GSA for the price of $1, under the condition that it be restored and remain a courthouse.

Lord Aeck Sargent in collaboration with Limbacher and Godfrey Architects teamed up with Travis County to adapt the courthouse to serve as a probate courts and records facility. The team underwent a thorough programming process which resulted in a building which honors the historic character of the building, fits court needs, complies with code, modern security requirements, and received LEED Silver certification.

Analysis involving carbon footprint modeling was conducted demonstrating the benefits of a preservation first approach as the most sustainable.
